Choquequirao Trek 5 Days / 4 Nights

The archaeological site of Choquequirao is another extraordinary example of Inca architecture and organization, it was a place that the Incas built to celebrate mountain and agriculture rituals. Choquequirao (comes from the Quechua language of the Inca empire which means “cradle of gold”), the mythical city of Choquequirao is really the lost city of the Incas and it is spectacular in beauty and size, as Machu Picchu.

It is situated around Salkantay Mountain (3035 m) surrounded by the snowy peaks of Yanama, Ampay, Choquetacarpu and Pumasillo. Located on the right side of the river Santa Teresa province of Apurimac.

DAY 01: Cusco – Cachora – Cocamasana – Playa Rosalina

We’ll pick up you from hotel in Cusco at 5:30 am heading towards the town of San Pedro de Cachora place where we’ll meet all the people who accompany us throughout the trek (chef, porters, assistant guide, etc). After breakfast we’ll get ready our equipment on mules and horses and then begin our trek. After 2 hours we reached Capuliyoc (2915 m) from where we have a beautiful view of snow-capped peaks of Padrayoc, Wayna Cachora Mountains and the first views of Apurimac valley. Then we’ll descend toward Coca Masana (2330m) where the climate becomes noticeably warmer, the flora and fauna begin to change. Finally we´ll arrive at Playa Rosalina (1550m) located next to the Apurimac River where we will settle and camp for this night.

Day 02: Playa Rosalina – Choquequirao

Early in the morning, after breakfast, we begin a steep road for approximately five hours, this route is the most difficult of the tour. We’ll reach Raqaypata that is next to the Chunchullumayo river where we’ll have lunch. Along the hike we can observe many orchids, wild flowers and many birds. From Raqaypata to Choquequirao (3035 m.s.n.m.) we’ll walk about 2 hours to reach the archaeological site of Choquequirao and where we will observe the entrance of the sun and the flight of the condor. Our camp will be out of the ruins.

DAY 03: Choquequirao – Raqaypata

This day we’ll explore the ruins of Choquequirao.

This is the day you’ll visit Choquequirao and we can see the sunrise from the archaeological complex of Choquequirao, a magical place full of energy and culture, you’ll appreciate the squares, sacred fountains, towers, agricultural and urban areas, and from the terrace observe the domains of the Inca. The visit is for about three hours accompanied by our guide who will explain details of this important Inca refuge and the importance of the Apurimac and Rio Blanco rivers, then you will have free time to take pictures and visit different sectors of the archaeological complex of Choquequirao.

In the afternoon we´ll begin our trek to Raqaypata. Where we will settle and camp for this night.

DAY 04: Raqaypata – Coca Masana

Immediately after breakfast, we continue our return trek with a steep descent towards the Apurimac River. There we’ll have our lunch. On the way again we could see beautiful mountains and green landscape. We will climb about 4 hours to reach Coca Masana(2330m) Where we will camp this night.

DAY 05: Coca Masana – Cachora – Cusco

This day after walking we can appreciate the canyon that forms the Apurimac River. We will take a new path that crosses the throat of the canyon, where we have a breathtaking view from Wayna Qalli toward the canyon, considered the most spectacular in South America. Arriving at Cachora our bus will take us back to Cusco.

Camera, films and batteries (batteries consume more quickly under cold conditions).
Hat or cap to protect against sun, rain or cold.
Mosquito repellent.
Toilet paper.
Snacks: biscuits, energy bars, chocolate, etc.
Water bottle and sterilizing tablets (Micropur).

El sitio arqueológico de Choquequirao es otro ejemplo extraordinario de la arquitectura y la organización Inca, que era un lugar que los incas construyeron para celebrar la montaña y la agricultura rituales. Choquequirao (proviene de la lengua quechua del Imperio Inca que significa “cuna de oro”), la mítica ciudad de Choquequirao es realmente la ciudad perdida de los Incas y es espectacular en belleza y tamaño, como Machu Picchu.

Está situado a unos montaña Salkantay (3035 m), rodeada por los picos nevados de Yanama, Ampay, Choquetacarpu y Pumasillo. Situado en el lado derecho del río Santa Teresa, provincia de Apurímac.

DÍA 01: Cusco – Cachora – Cocamasana – Playa Rosalina

Lo recogemos del hotel en la ciudad del Cusco a las 5:30 a.m. rumbo hacia la localidad de San Pedro de Cachora, lugar en el cual conoceremos a todas las personas que nos acompañaran durante toda la caminata (cocinero, porteadores, arrieros, asistente de guía). Después del desayuno alistaremos nuestro equipo en mulas y caballos para luego empezar nuestra caminata. Luego de 2 horas llegamos a Capuliyoc (2915 msnm) de donde tendremos una hermosa vista de picos y nevados de Padrayoc, Wayna Cachora y las primeras opiniones sobre el valle de Apurímac. Luego descenderemos hacia coca Masana (2330 msnm) donde el clima llega a ser perceptiblemente más caliente, la flora y la fauna empieza a cambiar. Finalmente llegaremos a Playa Rosalina (1550 msnm) ubicado al lado del río Apurímac donde nos instalaremos y acamparemos para pasar la noche.

DÍA 02: Playa Rosalina – Choquequirao

Temprano por la mañana, después de un desayuno, empezamos por un camino escarpado durante 5 horas aproximado, este trayecto es el más difícil de la excursión. Llegaremos a Raqaypata que está al lado del río de Chunchullumayo en donde tendremos el almuerzo. A lo largo de la caminata podremos observar variedad de orquídeas, flores salvajes así como muchos pájaros. De Raqaypata a Choquequirao (3035 m.s.n.m.) caminaremos 2 horas aproximadamente hasta llegar al sitio arqueológico de Choquequirao y de donde tendremos la posibilidad de observar la entrada del sol y el vuelo del cóndor. Nuestro campamento será fuera de las ruinas.

DÍA 03: Choquequirao – Raqaypata

Hoy nos dedicaremos a explorar las ruinas de Choquequirao.

Este es el día en que visitaremos Choquequirao y podremos apreciar el amanecer desde el complejo arqueológico. Visitaremos la ciudadela de Choquequirao, este lugar mágico lleno de energía y cultura, apreciaremos las plazas, las fuentes sagradas, los torreones, el sector agrícola y urbano, y desde la terraza observaremos los dominios del Inca. Visitará por tres horas acompañados por nuestro guía quien explicará detalles de este importante refugio Inca y la importancia que tienen los ríos Apurímac y Rio Blanco , después usted tendrá tiempo libre para tomar fotografías y visitar diferentes sectores del complejo arqueológico de Choquequirao.

Por la tarde comenzaremos nuestra caminata hacia Raqaypata. Donde nos instalaremos y acamparemos para pasar la noche.

DÍA 04: Raqaypata – Coca Masana

Inmediatamente después del desayuno, continuamos nuestra caminata de retorno con un pronunciado descenso hacia el Río Apurímac. Aquí tendremos nuestro almuerzo. En el trayecto nuevamente observaremos hermosos nevados y el verde paisaje. Subiremos 4 horas aproximadamente hasta llegar a Coca Masana. Lugar donde acamparemos (2330 msnm).

DÍA 05: Coca Masana – Cachora – Cusco

Este día después de haber caminado podremos apreciar la barranca que forma el río Apurimac. Después tomaremos un nuevo camino que cruce por la garganta de la barranca, de donde tendremos una vista impresionante desde Wayna Qalli hacia la barranca, considerada como el más espectacular de Sud América. Al llegar a Cachora abordaremos a nuestro bus para retornar hacia la ciudad del Cusco.
